Members may take lessons with our coaches at nearby barns. You are not required to own a horse to ride or be on the team. Lessons do cost money and are paid separately from the team.
Requirements to Join
Once a member of the Equestrian Team, you can participate as much or as little as you like. The only required fee for the team is a membership fee of $25 per semester. Members are also required to attend weekly meetings and participate in bake sale fundraising. Lessons and showing IHSA are not a requirement to be on the Team. Membership is exclusive to full time undergraduate students in good academic standing.
(Intercollegiate Horse Show Association)
We are a part of Zone 7 Region 5.
Riders of any level of experience can show IHSA! We are always looking for beginners to teach and add to the team. There are no tryouts. However, each rider must do an eval ride and is placed in a division that fits their level of experience. Showing IHSA earns each rider individual points (7 for first place, and so on) those individual points add to the team’s total. Riders who "point out", or earn 35 points in their division, qualify to compete in regionals.
When competing IHSA, the host school generally provides the horses that you will be riding. According to IHSA rules, riders for each class must draw their horse "out of a hat", get on, and go. This makes it a more level playing field because each rider is on a horse they've never ridden before. Riders in both hunt and stock are judged on their equitation and ability to effectively ride well.
The schools in our region that we usually compete against are:
Northern Illinois University
Illinois State University
Southeastern Missouri State
Truman State University
Washington University in St. Louis
Southern Illinois University Edwardsville
Saint Louis University
Western Illinois University
Kansas State University
Missouri State University
